What if sharing the patterns we see *is* our creative expression?

A drawing emerges from unplanned shadows
Hi, I’m JD Faulk.
We each possess a day-to-day creativity that goes largely unrecognized within ourselves.
We see shapes in the clouds and finish each others sentences. We make meals from leftovers.
We are pattern-seekers and we fill in the unknown with our “what-if?” minds.
I see creative expression and adaptation as essentially the same action.
We adapt to changes all the time, so why do so many of us feel un-creative?
Mostly, I think, we carry unhelpful stories around creativity.
Maybe re-framing the conversation can help:
I find it helpful to think about creative expression as pattern completion. It’s easy to ask yourself, “what do I see now?” . . .but we need something to work with. . . .anything! We need something on the page.
If the page is blank, try putting down anything. Grab clippings from a magazine. Use shadows to help find a pattern on the paper. Create a sample loop and listen for inspiration.
Start anywhere. Put anything down. Then ask yourself: “What do I see now?”
What if sharing the patterns we see *is* our creative expression?
